What treatment techniques do Osteopaths use?

Treatment techniques are applied according to specialised osteopathic principles that take a global approach to correcting body dysfunction. This means that your symptoms are considered on the context of your whole body function, to identify the parts of your body that have caused your symptoms. For example, resolving neck pain can often involve treatment of dysfunction in the lower back.

To illustrate this point, consider the case of a car with one wheel slightly misaligned. While the car can run well for some time, the tyre will eventually wear out. Further problems can develop, for example in the steering column. This same idea can be applied to our bodies.

In the course of a treatment, Osteopaths will choose a combination of the following techniques to promote recovery.

  • Soft tissue massage and stretching - joint mobilisation techniques
  • Muscle energy techniques - counter strain techniques
  • Functional techniques - manipulation using minimal force
